The Competence Centre strives for CO2 neutrality through directly effective measures in aviation. The development of a strategy to substitute fossil kerosene with alternative aviation fuels - Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) - is therefore one of the main goals. CENA actively supports the development of technology for production of synthetic kerosene up to industrial scale through PtL (Power-to-Liquid) method. The first step is construction of a PtL pilot plant in Hoechst, Frankfurt am Main. For this purpose, the current technological readiness levels (TRLs) of various technology paths have been analysed. CENA also plans to promote different processes that are currently less developed but prove to be promising. In general, CENA aims at avoiding duplication of research in different plant-types and projects.
In addition, CENA develops a regulatory framework for an economically sensible production and use of PtL. At the same time, maintaining German aviation’s performance levels and international competitiveness are also carefully considered. CENA therefore pursues activities at both federal and the EU level and evaluates these in terms of their impact on sustainability and profitability of aviation.
The Competence Centre is actively involved in the work of associations and supports the Hessian Ministry of Economics, Energy, Transport and Housing in its task of coordinating the state activities on the German federal PtL roadmap.
